The Draw is Out!
The group stage of the 2013 ACN was finalized yesterday in Johannesburg, South Africa. At a colourful ceremony that had CAF and South Africa presidents in attendance, the teams were picked and grouped according to the pots and the seeding adopted. Like any major football tournament, the draw came out with what is usually tagged ‘Group of Death’ in football. The 2013 ACN comprises of Tunisia, Algeria, Cote d’Ivoire and Togo.
Nigeria is in group C with Zambia (defending champions), Burkina Faso and Ethiopia. Not bad if I may say but then football is about the team that shows up prepared on the day. Arsenal was taught this time tested lesson yesterday!
The full group draw is captured below for your pleasure.
African Nations Cup 2013 Group draws:
Group A – South Africa, Cape Verde, Morocco, Angola.
Group B – Ghana, DR Congo, Niger, Mali.
Group C – Zambia, Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Nigeria.
Group D – Ivory Coast, Algeria, Tunisia, Togo.
Having got to this stage, I believe Nigeria must commence preparations in earnest in order to perform creditably at the event. A right approach to this tournament could yield a new triumph for the Nation. It is about time that we began to pull our weight in Africa once more. An appearance in the finals after 12 years won’t be out of sort.
