Sevilla manager Eduardo Berizzo informed his squad that he had prostate cancer at half-time before the side’s incredible comeback versus Liverpool.
The Reds flew out of the blocks in the fast-paced Champions League clash and went 3-0 in front on the 30-minute mark following a brace from Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane’s header.
Jurgen Klopp’s men looked to be cruising to a Group E victory but Sevilla were a different beast after the break and it’s understood Berizzo gave an impassioned speech at half-time where he confirmed the bad news to his players.
On Wednesday morning it was announced that the Argentine has been diagnosed with prostate cancer and Sevilla’s president, Jose Castro, responded to the reports in the aftermath of the memorable 3-3 draw.
‘As it is a personal and complicated issue, I prefer to wait to tomorrow [Wednesday],’ he told Spanish radio station Cope.
Sevilla midfielder Ever Banega suggested that everybody at the club is behind Berizzo.
‘He is the most important of all of us, he has on the right path and we are with him to the hilt,’ Banega said.
Meanwhile, Liverpool manager, Jurgen Klopp does not believe his side have a mentality problem despite their second-half collapse at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium.
‘I don’t doubt the mentality of the boys, not a bit. We showed already a fantastic mentality. We showed it in a lot of other games. It’s not like this,’ he said.
