In club football anywhere in the world, there are few games that command the attention and pedigree of the El Clasico. The world stands at attention anytime Real and Barcelona lock horns whether in La Liga or any other competition.
In this latest encounter in the long line of El Classico matches, this particular one means much more in the scheme of things to one side than it does to the other side. Real Madrid are in a difficult situation when it comes to their current standing in La Liga. They’re currently 11 points behind their rivals, and playing them at home make this game a must win for Los Blancos.
Anything less than three points would be a disappointment for Real and make things all the more difficult when it comes to their attempt at climbing back towards the top of the Spanish top flight.
When it comes to tactics both sides are looking like they’ll deploy a similar variation of a 4-4-2 system, at least on paper. Real Madrid are looking like they’ll play a 4-4-2 or some variation of it with Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema sitting up top. The variation to this could come with Isco playing the false attacker role where he has more freedom in the midfield behind Benzema and Ronaldo.
Real Madrid captain, Sergio Ramos said it best when he said: “It’s a really big game, no words can do it justice. It’s a different sort of match. It’s the most important one in world football, and given the points difference ahead of kick-off, we’ve got to win it to keep ourselves in the hunt in La Liga.”
Barcelona are unbeaten in La Liga this season and have managed to turn around the earlier sentiments that power has shifted in Spain after their two legs defeat in the Spanish Super Cup. They will be seeking to maintain that record and ensure they leave the Bernabeu with their sterling records intact.
Ronaldo has struggled a bit this season in comparison to his arch rival, Lionel Messi. These two guys are match winners and this game represent the biggest field through which they highlight their importance to their respective teams.
Whoever wins this match would have taken a giant step towards regaining the league title or stopping the determined match of the other.
As always, El Clasico is there to enjoy with the array of top talents in the world on play. We will do just that!
